AMTA-KY CHAPTER SPORTS MASSAGE EVENT TEAM
MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS
1. Hours/Education
Twelve hours of instructional workshop and coached practice are recommended as the minimum educational requirement for the Event Therapist. The workshop topics include, but are not limited to:
a. Pre, post and inter-event massage
b. Appropriate strokes
c. Contraindications
d. Cramp management
2. Validation of Education
If the applicant already has sports massage training, validation of skill may be required through one of two methods:
1. Provide transcripts, course outlines, handouts, certificates, etc. that document training.
2. Take a proficiency exam given by the team to demonstrate abilities in the areas described below.+
3. The Event Team Coordinator/Director and Event Team Coordinator should also have the following additional training:
a. 4 hours in thermoregulatory dysfunction and cramping
b. First Aid and CPR through a recognized organization such as American Heart Association or American Red Cross
4. All Team Members
a. First Aid and CPR through a recognized organization such as American Heart Association or American Red Cross
+ Essential Event Sport Massage practical skills include, but are not limited to:
1. Appropriately applied event massage techniques for pre-event, inter/intra event and post event massage
2. Appropriately applied event stretching techniques for pre-event, inter/intra event and post event massage
3. Techniques for cramp management
4. Thermoregulatory dysfunction management
5. Interview content for athletes and appropriate support comments
6. Management of thermoregulatory dysfunction and the care for these conditions:
a. Hypothermia
b. Hyperthermia
c. Heat stroke
7. Physical outlining and identifying major muscles and joint structures
8. Musculoskeletal stresses caused by specific sports and movements. Examples include:
a. Runner – lower body muscles and joints
b. Kayaker – upper body muscles and joints

Therapists Needed to help with
MS 150 Bike Ride
June 5 and 6, 2010
Ann Boone is event coordinator for this event
The MS150 Bike ride starts at Churchill Downs in Louisville, stops over night in Frankfort and continues to Keenland in Lexington.
The cycling tour routes are from 25 miles to 150 miles. This event is a fundraiser to raise $ and awareness for MS.
Date & locations for massage:
Sat, June 5- at Salato Wildlife center in Frankfort, KY. Therapists needed from 11am-6pm*
Sun, June 6- at Keenland in Lexington, KY. Therapists needed from 11am-6pm*
*You can sign up for any portion of the days/times therapists are needed, or stay for all!
-We will be donating massage to the top 100 fundraisers/cyclists of about 10-15 mins.
All other cyclist will be paying $1/min for massage
What to Bring:
-massage table (you will not need a face cradle or sheets)
-some food, snacks, and drinks
-a GOOD ATTITUDE
-also suggest to bring a few towels

Ironman Louisville Massage Team
Sunday, August 29th, 2010
Louisville Convention Center in Downtown Louisville
Volunteer Massage Therapists (students are welcome too) needed on race day between hours of 4pm-12:30am.
Please bring a massage table and yourself - all other supplies will be provided including food and drink.
A mandatory meeting will be held on Sunday, Aug 29th from 2:00pm to 3:00pm. All volunteers must attend this meeting. The meeting will include a brief review of post-event massage, hand signals, and procedures to address cramping. It will also be an excellent opportunity to meet the people you will be working with.
