The American Massage Therapy Association® represents more than 56,000 massage therapists. AMTA works to establish massage therapy as integral to the maintenance of good health and complementary to other therapeutic processes; to advance the profession through ethics and standards, continuing education, professional publications, legislative efforts, public education, and fostering the development of members.

The Massage Therapy Foundation advances the knowledge and practice of massage therapy by supporting scientific research, education and community service. It was founded by AMTA in 1990 with the mission of bringing the benefits of massage therapy to the broadest spectrum of society through the generation, dissemination and application of knowledge in the field of massage therapy.


The National Certification Board of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB) was founded in 1992  to uphold a national standard for excellence in therapeutic massage and bodywork.  Currently, applicants for licensure in Kentucky must show evidence that they have passed the NCBTMB examination.


Kentucky Board of Licensure for Massage Therapy administers and enforces the statutory authority monitors the needs of the consuming public. The Board examines and licenses all eligible candidates for entry into the profession as a Massage Therapist. It recommends appropriate changes in the law to assure fairness and equality.
